What Is a Whale in Crypto?

Updated November 5, 2026 · By Moby

A crypto whale is a wallet that holds or trades enough of a token to move its price. There is no fixed dollar cutoff. What counts depends on the token's size and how thin its liquidity is. On a small Solana token, a wallet that would be ordinary on a major coin can still be a whale.

Why whales matter

A large buy or sell moves the price more when there are few other orders. On a small Solana token, one wallet can be a large share of the supply. A dump into thin liquidity can drop the price fast. Watching whales is a way to see that risk. It is not a way to copy a profit.

How to spot whale activity

Look at onchain transfers into and out of large wallets, and at large buys on new tokens. A Solana wallet tracker lists wallets and the tokens they move. Size alone is not proof of skill. A wallet can be large because it received tokens early, not because it trades well.

Should you follow whales?

Following a whale can mean you buy after they did, which is a late entry. Some large wallets trade with themselves, or sell into the buyers who followed them. You can be the exit. Treat a whale move as information, then decide for yourself.

Let an agent watch whales for you

A whale tracking agent can watch wallets and sum up what they buy and sell. Copy trading is a different choice: the agent mirrors trades, still inside caps you set. You set your agent's limits on max per trade, daily buy volume and market-cap range from the Moby app, and Moby checks them server-side on every buy your agent makes. The agent wallet is funded in USDC. Each user has one agent.

Frequently asked questions

How much crypto makes you a whale?

There is no fixed amount. On a major coin, a whale holds a very large balance. On a small Solana token, a much smaller bag can move the price. Judge the wallet against that token's supply and liquidity, not against a single dollar line.

Can whales manipulate prices?

A large order can move a thin market. That is price impact. Some large wallets also trade in ways that pull other buyers in, then sell. Seeing a whale buy is not a reason to buy.

How do I track whale wallets on Solana?

Use onchain data: the wallet's transfers and its buys. A Solana wallet tracker is one place to start. An agent can watch a list and report changes, still inside the caps you set.

What does Moby charge?

For a live swap, a 0.75% swap fee (minimum $0.90 per swap), plus onchain fees. Watching a wallet does not by itself place a trade. The agent wallet is funded in USDC, and agent trading is Solana only for now.

Try it with a Moby Agent

Set up a Moby Agent with its own wallet and your spending guardrails, then connect it to the AI you use.

You set your agent's limits on max per trade, daily buy volume and market-cap range from the Moby app, and Moby checks them server-side on every buy your agent makes.

Moby Agents connect from Codex, Claude Code (CLI), Gemini CLI (with a paid Gemini API key or enterprise access) and Grok CLI, with the agent key. In ChatGPT, paste your personal Moby connector URL from the app. ChatGPT: works on Business, Enterprise and Edu workspaces that allow custom MCP servers (web).

Each user gets one agent, with its own wallet separate from the main wallet in the app. The wallet is funded in USDC. The agent cannot withdraw or send funds. Agent trading is Solana only for now. Agent trading on Base, BNB Chain and Robinhood Chain is coming soon.
