OpenClaw Trading: How People Use It to Trade, and How to Stay Safe
OpenClaw is a self-hosted gateway that links chat apps like Telegram or WhatsApp to AI agents. People trade with it by adding skills or MCP servers from brokers and wallets. Security researchers found hundreds of malicious crypto trading skills on ClawHub in 2026, so use official connections only, a separate wallet and strict limits.
What is OpenClaw?
Per docs.openclaw.ai, OpenClaw is a self-hosted gateway that connects chat apps (WhatsApp, Telegram, Discord, Slack and others) to AI agents. It is open source (MIT) under the OpenClaw Foundation. You install it from OpenClaw's own docs. Config lives in ~/.openclaw/openclaw.json. Skills come from the ClawHub marketplace. It supports MCP servers (stdio, SSE or HTTP, Streamable HTTP, with OAuth). This page does not print an install command. Use OpenClaw's install docs if you choose to run it.
How people trade with OpenClaw
Two paths, described neutrally. First, skills from ClawHub: third-party code that runs on your machine. Second, MCP servers from a broker or wallet provider: official connections. Prefer the second wherever a provider offers one. The searches openclaw trading bot, openclaw trading, openclaw crypto and openclaw crypto trading all land on one of those two paths.
Stocks via a broker MCP
Per Robinhood's support article: "Robinhood also supports connecting from Perplexity, OpenClaw, Replit, AWS Quick, Poke, and any localhost platform," using its Trading MCP link and authentication steps. That is the openclaw stock trading and openclaw robinhood path this page can verify. Details of the account and the order types are on Moby vs Robinhood MCP. This page does not list any other broker, because no other broker's docs were confirmed here as naming OpenClaw.
Crypto via wallet providers
Per Bankr's docs, its Bankr Skill works with skills-compatible agents including OpenClaw, and Bankr has a guide for connecting OpenClaw to its LLM Gateway. See Moby vs Bankr. Solana trading through OpenClaw depends on the skill or MCP server you add. Openclaw solana is not a feature of OpenClaw by itself.
OpenClaw and MCP
OpenClaw supports MCP servers over stdio, SSE or HTTP and Streamable HTTP, with OAuth where the server needs it, per OpenClaw's docs. That is the openclaw mcp question in one paragraph. OpenClaw's MCP docs are the setup reference. MCP for trading explains what a trading server should and should not be allowed to do. OAuth in that sentence is OpenClaw's option for servers that use it.
The malicious skill problem
Openclaw skills is a much broader search than trading. One mention is enough: skills are how third-party code gets onto the machine that holds the chat gateway. The trading-specific problem is documented by security researchers. This page does not print payload details, addresses or commands. Read the writeups.
- OpenSourceMalware and Infosecurity Magazine reported a campaign of malicious ClawHub skills posing as crypto trading tools in early 2026. The skills tried to get people to run fake tools. The precise counts are in those writeups. This page does not repeat figures that were only seen in search summaries.
- Bitdefender Labs wrote up malicious behavior in OpenClaw skills it analyzed in early February 2026, including crypto-themed skills aimed at wallet keys and API secrets. Read Bitdefender's post for the breakdown.
- Palo Alto Networks Unit 42 reported that ClawHub added VirusTotal and ClawScan screening, and that some skills still got through and were later removed. Read Unit 42 for the screening timeline.
The research is about third-party skills, not a claim that OpenClaw itself is malware. Prefer an official connection from a provider whose docs name OpenClaw.
A safer setup checklist
- Prefer an official MCP connection from your broker or wallet over a third-party skill.
- Read a skill's code before installing. Avoid any that ask you to run a downloaded tool or paste a command.
- Never give an agent your main wallet's private key or seed phrase, or exchange API keys with withdrawal rights.
- Use a separate trading wallet or account with a small balance.
- Enforce limits on the server side (max per trade, daily budget), not only in the prompt.
- Turn on trade confirmations where the provider offers them.
- Keep OpenClaw and skills updated. Remove skills you do not use.
- Review trades daily.

If you want a hosted Solana agent instead
OpenClaw isn't an officially listed Moby host. Any MCP client that can send an Authorization header can connect using the generic setup. The generic setup is the Agents page: a Bearer agent key in an Authorization header, for the hosts Moby lists.
Connect it from Codex, Claude Code (CLI), Gemini CLI (with a paid Gemini API key or enterprise access) and Grok CLI, with the agent key. In ChatGPT, paste your personal Moby connector URL from the app. ChatGPT: works on Business, Enterprise and Edu workspaces that allow custom MCP servers (web). Moby Agents trade Solana tokens, paid in USDC, including tokenized stocks. Each user gets one agent, with its own wallet separate from your main in-app wallet. The agent cannot withdraw or send funds. You set your agent's limits on max per trade, daily buy volume and market-cap range from the Moby app, and Moby checks them server-side on every buy your agent makes. Tell your agent your exits and it places real take-profit and stop-loss orders on Moby, including a one-call bracket. A Moby Agent is a side agent wallet next to your main setup, not a replacement, and not an OpenClaw install. Set up a Moby Agent with its own wallet and your spending guardrails, then connect it to the AI you use.
Frequently asked questions
What is OpenClaw?
OpenClaw is an open-source, self-hosted gateway that connects chat apps such as WhatsApp, Telegram, Discord and Slack to AI agents. You run it yourself and extend it with skills from the ClawHub marketplace or with MCP servers.
Can OpenClaw trade crypto or stocks?
It can if you connect it to a broker or wallet. Robinhood lists OpenClaw as a platform that can connect to its Trading MCP, and Bankr offers a skill that works with OpenClaw. What it can trade depends on the provider you connect.
Is an OpenClaw trading bot safe?
It depends on what you install. Security researchers found hundreds of malicious crypto trading skills on ClawHub in 2026 that tried to steal wallet keys and API secrets. Prefer official MCP connections, use a separate wallet with a small balance and never share your seed phrase.
Does OpenClaw support MCP?
Yes. Per OpenClaw's docs, it supports MCP servers over stdio, SSE or HTTP and Streamable HTTP, including servers that use OAuth.
How do I connect OpenClaw to Robinhood?
Per Robinhood's support article, OpenClaw is one of the platforms that can connect to the Robinhood Trading MCP. You add Robinhood's Trading MCP link and follow its authentication steps. Check Robinhood's article for the current link and steps.
Can I use a Moby Agent with OpenClaw?
OpenClaw isn't an officially listed Moby host. Any MCP client that can send an Authorization header can connect using the generic setup. Connect a Moby Agent from Codex, Claude Code (CLI), Gemini CLI (with a paid Gemini API key or enterprise access) and Grok CLI, with the agent key. In ChatGPT, paste your personal Moby connector URL from the app. ChatGPT: works on Business, Enterprise and Edu workspaces that allow custom MCP servers (web).
How do I protect my wallet when an AI agent trades?
Give the agent its own wallet with a small balance, keep your main wallet and seed phrase out of reach, set limits that are enforced on the server side, set exits on every position and review trades often.
Try it with a Moby Agent
Set up a Moby Agent with its own wallet and your spending guardrails, then connect it to the AI you use.
You set your agent's limits on max per trade, daily buy volume and market-cap range from the Moby app, and Moby checks them server-side on every buy your agent makes.
Moby Agents trade Solana tokens, paid in USDC, including tokenized stocks.
Each user gets one agent, with its own wallet separate from your main in-app wallet. The agent cannot withdraw or send funds.
Tell your agent your exits and it places real take-profit and stop-loss orders on Moby, including a one-call bracket.
A 0.75% swap fee (minimum $0.90 per swap), plus onchain fees.
10% of the Moby fee back in $MOBY on every swap, 20% after your first swap, up to 30% as you climb tiers.
Start at Moby Agents. The product frame is agentic trading.
