Moby Agent vs Alpaca MCP Server: Which AI Trading Setup Fits You?
Alpaca's MCP server is an open-source tool you run on your computer with your Alpaca API keys, so Claude, Cursor or another MCP client can trade US stocks, ETFs, options and crypto, with paper trading on by default. A Moby Agent is hosted, trades Solana tokens paid in USDC including tokenized stocks, and checks your limits on every buy.
The 30-second verdict
Pick the Alpaca MCP server if you want to build and test strategies on US stocks, ETFs and options with paper money first, want multi-leg options and trailing stops, are comfortable running a local server with API keys, or already trade through Alpaca.
Pick a Moby Agent if you want live onchain trading of Solana tokens and memecoins, or tokenized stocks on Solana paid in USDC (for example NVDAx, TSLAx, SPYx), from a hosted agent with nothing to install and limits checked on every buy.
The honest part: they solve different problems and work well side by side. Many people prototype with Alpaca paper trading and run a small Solana side agent on Moby.
How the Alpaca MCP server works
Alpaca's official MCP server, searched as alpaca mcp and alpaca mcp server, is open source under the MIT license. Alpaca's README describes it as a way to trade stocks, ETFs, crypto, and options, run data analysis, and build strategies in plain English from LLM tools and IDEs. Version 2 is a rewrite on FastMCP and Alpaca's OpenAPI specs. Alpaca's docs count 65 tools. GitHub showed 1,055 stars, release v2.4.0 on October 12, 2026, and a last push on October 27, 2026, when this page was checked on November 3, 2026. Star counts move. The repo is the source of truth.
Setup, per the README: Python 3.10+ and uv, then uvx alpaca-mcp-server with ALPACA_API_KEY and ALPACA_SECRET_KEY in your MCP client config. Clients documented in the README include Claude Desktop, Cursor, VS Code, PyCharm, Claude Code, Antigravity CLI and Docker. Alpaca's docs table also lists Gemini CLI. Antigravity CLI is on Alpaca's list. It is not a Moby host. Alpaca's docs also say never paste API keys into chat.
ChatGPT and Claude mobile, per the README, "require a remote MCP server. This package does not configure remote MCP authentication, so do not expose it directly to the public internet with your Alpaca API keys." That is Alpaca's caveat, not a claim that ChatGPT can never reach a remote server you host yourself. The package does not set that up for you.
ALPACA_TOOLSETS lets you turn on only what you need: account, trading, watchlists, assets, stock, crypto and options data, corporate actions, news and more. Orders, per the README: stocks market, limit, stop, stop-limit, trailing-stop and bracket orders; crypto market, limit and stop-limit; options single or multi-leg. Real-time data beyond the free tier needs Alpaca's paid market data plan. The README mentions Algo Trader Plus. This page mentions alpaca trading and the alpaca api once, as the brokerage and the developer product behind the server, and does not try to rank those brand searches.
Paper trading by default
ALPACA_PAPER_TRADE defaults to true. Set it to false with live keys to trade real money. That is a genuine strength of alpaca paper trading and alpaca ai trading experiments: you can test an agent's behavior with fake money first. Keep paper trading on while you learn what the agent will send.
How a Moby Agent works
Moby Agents trade Solana tokens, paid in USDC, including tokenized stocks. Examples from the liquid list: NVDAx, TSLAx, AAPLx, SPYx and QQQx. See tokenized stocks. Each user gets one agent, with its own wallet separate from your main in-app wallet. The agent cannot withdraw or send funds. You set your agent's limits on max per trade, daily buy volume and market-cap range from the Moby app, and Moby checks them server-side on every buy your agent makes.
Set up a Moby Agent with its own wallet and your spending guardrails, then connect it to the AI you use. Connect it from Codex, Claude Code (CLI), Gemini CLI (with a paid Gemini API key or enterprise access) and Grok CLI, with the agent key. In ChatGPT, paste your personal Moby connector URL from the app. ChatGPT: works on Business, Enterprise and Edu workspaces that allow custom MCP servers (web). Nothing to install and nothing to keep running on your machine. The agent key is a Bearer key from the Moby app. Setup: Moby Agents, the Moby MCP, Codex, Claude Code (CLI) and Grok CLI.
Tell your agent your exits and it places real take-profit and stop-loss orders on Moby, including a one-call bracket. Moby Agents trade with real funds. There is no paper mode on Moby to claim. Start with a small USDC balance and tight limits. Before a buy, the agent can read smart-money data and run a rug check. AI agent security is the checklist for keys.

Where Alpaca's MCP server is stronger
Open source and inspectable. Paper trading by default. US stocks, ETFs and options with a long list of order types, including multi-leg options. Deep market data and news tools. It works in many MCP clients and IDEs, which suits research and backtesting-style workflows. A trading bot you are still designing can sit on paper keys until the behavior is the one you wanted.
Where a Moby Agent is stronger
Hosted, with nothing to install or keep running. It works in ChatGPT with your personal connector URL on the plans named above. Solana tokens and memecoins onchain. Tokenized stocks on Solana paid in USDC. Server-side limits on size, daily volume and market-cap range. Smart-money data and a rug check before a buy. An agent wallet that cannot withdraw or send.
Use both: Alpaca for research, Moby as a Solana side agent
Prototype prompts and strategies on Alpaca paper trading. When you want an agent trading Solana tokens with real limits, fund a Moby Agent with a small USDC balance. How to assemble the pieces of a bot, including data and backtests, is in build an AI trading bot. backtesting.py is one research library people pair with that work. Frequently asked questions
What is the Alpaca MCP server?
It is Alpaca's official, open-source MCP server. You run it on your computer with your Alpaca API keys, and an MCP client such as Claude Desktop, Claude Code or Cursor can then check your account, pull market data and place stock, ETF, options and crypto orders through Alpaca.
Does the Alpaca MCP server use paper trading?
Yes, by default. Per Alpaca's README, ALPACA_PAPER_TRADE is true unless you set it to false with live keys. That lets you test an AI agent with fake money before you trade real funds.
Can I use the Alpaca MCP server with ChatGPT?
Not with the default setup. Alpaca's README says ChatGPT and Claude mobile need a remote MCP server, that the package does not configure remote authentication, and that you should not expose it to the public internet with your API keys. It recommends a supported desktop client instead.
How do I connect Claude to Alpaca?
Per Alpaca, install uv, then add the server to your Claude Desktop or Claude Code MCP config with the command uvx alpaca-mcp-server and your ALPACA_API_KEY and ALPACA_SECRET_KEY as environment variables. Keep paper trading on while you test.
What is the difference between a Moby Agent and the Alpaca MCP server?
Alpaca's server runs on your computer and trades US stocks, ETFs, options and crypto through your Alpaca account. A Moby Agent is hosted and trades Solana tokens, paid in USDC, including tokenized stocks, onchain from its own wallet, with your limits checked server-side on every buy.
Can a Moby Agent withdraw my funds?
No. Each user gets one agent, with its own wallet separate from your main in-app wallet. The agent cannot withdraw or send funds, and Moby checks your limits server-side on every buy your agent makes.
