AI Agents in Finance
An AI agent in finance is software that uses a language model plus tools to read financial data and take steps, such as research, reconciliation, or placing a trade, within permissions a person sets. Most are assistants that suggest. Fewer can act.
Assistant, bot or agent
People use "AI in finance" for three different products. An assistant reads and explains. A bot repeats rules you configured. An agent chooses a next step and calls a tool. The money stays where the product says it stays.
As of November 4, 2026. A longer map of the three levels is on trading with AI.
| Assistant | Bot | Agent | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reads data | Yes | Yes, the feeds you connect | Yes, through tools |
| Decides | Suggests only | Follows the rule | Chooses within your instructions |
| Acts | No | Places orders the rule allows | Calls tools the platform allows |
| Who holds the money | You | The account or exchange you connected | The account or wallet the product names |
Where AI agents show up in finance
Research and summaries. An assistant reads filings, prices or news and writes a note. You still place the trade.
Back-office work. Teams use models to match records, flag odd payments, or draft a first pass of a review. A person still owns the decision.
Personal finance. A chat can sort spending or explain a form. It does not, by itself, move money at a broker.
Trading. Some products only signal. Some run a bot you configured. Some let an agent call a trading tool. Those are different permissions, and only the last one places an order from a chat.
AI agents that trade
Tool access is usually an MCP server or a scoped key. The agent can call only the tools that server publishes. A read tool does not move money. A buy tool does.
Moby is one example of an agent that can act. Your AI agent trades Solana tokens, including memes, majors and tokenized stocks (xStocks on Solana, like TSLAx), with your USDC, inside the limits you set. Each user gets one agent, with its own self-custody Solana wallet, separate from the main in-app wallet. You set your agent's limits on max per trade, daily buy limit and market-cap range from the Moby app, and Moby checks them server-side on every buy your agent makes. AI Trading on Base, BNB Chain and Robinhood Chain is coming soon.
Brokers also document agents. Robinhood MCP and Alpaca MCP are their setups, compared on those pages from each company's own docs. Read those pages for what each one trades and who approves an order.
Guardrails that matter
Spending caps. A max per trade and a daily buy limit, checked by the server, beat a promise in the chat.
Approval mode. The agent prepares the order and waits. You say yes, or you do not.
A revocable key. If the key is an agent key, you can turn it off in the app without handing the model a wallet private key.
No withdrawal tool. An agent that can buy and sell still should not be able to send funds to an address you did not choose.
An audit trail. You should be able to see what it quoted and what filled. More on the controls is in AI agent guardrails and AI agent security.
Risks
Wrong answers, prompt injection and losses are the ordinary risks. A model can misread a filing, follow a hidden instruction on a web page, or buy a token that falls. The CFTC customer advisory "AI Won't Turn Trading Bots into Money Machines" says AI technology can't predict the future, and that promises of guaranteed or very high returns are a warning sign. Nothing on this page is a promise of profit.
How to try one small
- Create one agent in the Moby app and fund its wallet with a small amount of USDC.
- Set a low max per trade, a daily buy limit and a market-cap range. Leave approval on.
- Connect the host you already use. Codex, Claude Code (CLI), Grok CLI, Gemini CLI (with a paid Gemini API key or enterprise access), or ChatGPT on Business, Enterprise and Edu workspaces that allow custom MCP servers (web). Steps are on Moby Agents.
FAQ
What are AI agents in finance?
Software that uses a language model and tools to read financial data and take a next step, such as research or a trade, inside permissions a person sets.
Can an AI agent trade for me?
Only if you connect it to a product that publishes a trading tool. On Moby the agent trades Solana tokens from its own wallet, funded in USDC, and only inside the limits you set.
Are AI agents in finance safe?
They can lose money, follow a bad prompt, or act on stale data. Caps, approval, a revocable key and no withdrawal tool reduce the ways that happens. They do not remove market risk.
What does Moby charge?
A 0.75% swap fee (minimum $0.90 per swap), plus onchain fees.
Try it with a Moby Agent
Set up a Moby Agent and read agentic trading for how that agent sits next to trades you place yourself. Trading crypto and tokenized stocks is risky and you can lose money. Nothing on this page is investment advice.
