How to Use ChatGPT for Trading (and What It Can't Do)
How to use ChatGPT for trading
Use ChatGPT as a research and planning assistant. Ask it to summarize news with sources, turn your idea into written entry, exit and sizing rules, analyze a CSV of your past trades, and draft code for a backtest. Check every number it gives you. ChatGPT does not place trades, so execution needs a broker, bot or AI agent.
| Task | What to ask | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Research with sources | Summarize this news and link each claim. | Open the source and read the date. |
| Strategy rules | Turn this idea into market, entry, exit, stop, size, and a daily cap. | You would follow every line. Blank fields stay blank. |
| Your own trades | Analyze this CSV. Group results by setup and show the math. | Recompute one average from the file. The chat cannot fetch a live quote. |
| Journal review | Review wins and losses by setup, average loss versus average win, and rule breaks. | The groups match the log you pasted. |
| Learn a concept | Explain this order type, chart pattern, or tokenomics term, plus a case where it fails. | Compare it with the exchange docs or the project page. |
| Draft code | Draft a backtest or indicator script I will run somewhere else. | You run it and check one output row by hand. |
The same tasks cover stock trading and crypto. A ChatGPT trading strategy is the rules row: written entry, exit, stop, and size.
What ChatGPT is good at for traders
Research with sources
Turn on web search. OpenAI's help page on searching the web with ChatGPT says ChatGPT can answer with current information and links to relevant sources, and that you can select a citation to open the source. The same page says search results and citations can be incomplete, outdated, or incorrect. Open the source. Check when it was published. If a number matters, read it on the source page.
Keep the ask narrow: one market, one time window, and a link on every claim. Drop any sentence the citation does not support.
Writing your strategy down
A vague idea is not a strategy. Ask ChatGPT to turn it into explicit rules: market, entry trigger, exit, stop, position size, and max trades per day. Paste the idea in your own words, and tell it to mark any field you left blank instead of inventing one.
If the rewrite adds a market, a size, or a stop you did not choose, delete that line. Keep the rules in a note you control.
Analyzing your own data
Export a CSV of your trades and upload that file. OpenAI's help page on data analysis with ChatGPT says ChatGPT can write and run Python on uploaded files. It also says the Python environment used for data analysis cannot make external web requests or API calls. The chat analyzes the file you give it. It does not pull a live price. If you need today's quote, put it in the file or the prompt, and ask to see the code.
Ask for results by setup, average win, average loss, and rows that broke a rule you name. Recompute one figure from the file before you trust the rest.
Trade journaling and review
Once a week, paste the log. Group wins and losses by setup, compare average loss with average win, and list rule breaks such as a moved stop or a market that was not in the plan. ChatGPT cannot know about a trade you left out.
Learning concepts
Ask it to explain an order type, a chart pattern, or a token's tokenomics, then check that explanation against a primary source. "Explain a stop-limit order, and give one case where it would not fill" is better than a definition alone. For a token, ask what the supply schedule claims, then open the page that states it.
Drafting code
ChatGPT can draft a backtest or an indicator script that you run in your own environment. Read it, run it on data you trust, and compare one output row by hand. A script that looks finished in the chat has not been tested.
Copyable ChatGPT trading prompts
These six prompts are short enough to paste on a phone. Replace the brackets. Each one ends with a check. None of them asks for a price prediction or a guaranteed setup.
Market brief
Summarize the main news for [market or ticker] from the last seven days. Cite a link for each claim. List what you are unsure about.
Strategy to rules
Turn this idea into rules: market, entry trigger, exit, stop, position size, and max trades per day. Idea: [paste idea]. Do not invent a field I left blank. Show your math for position size, and list what you are unsure about.
Risk check on a planned trade
I plan this trade: [market, direction, entry, stop, size]. List the risks, what would invalidate the idea, and whether the size fits a max loss I will state. Do not predict the price. List what you are unsure about.
Trade journal review
Here is my trade log. Group wins and losses by setup, compare average loss with average win, and flag rule breaks. Show your math. List what you are unsure about.
Token or company research checklist
Build a research checklist for [token or company]: what it is, who holds it or who runs it, liquidity or volume, and recent news. Cite sources. List what you are unsure about.
Argue against my trade
Argue against this trade: [describe it]. Give the strongest reasons it fails, the facts that would change your critique, and what you are unsure about. Do not offer a price target.
What ChatGPT can't do for trading
It cannot place trades or move money
OpenAI's help page on Finances in ChatGPT says ChatGPT can help you understand, plan, and evaluate financial decisions, but it cannot take financial actions for you. The list of what ChatGPT cannot do includes "Make trades" and "Move money". The same page says ChatGPT is not a fiduciary, registered investment adviser, broker-dealer, tax preparer, or law firm, and that responses are for informational and planning purposes only. You can use the chat to prepare. A broker, a bot, or an AI agent is what places the order.
It can be wrong or out of date
Search results can be incomplete. A model can also state a figure that never appeared in a source. Recompute any number you would rely on, and confirm a quote on a live chart. Open the source, or calculate the figure from the file you uploaded.
It does not predict markets
Can ChatGPT predict the stock market? No. It can summarize information and help you reason, but it does not know future prices. The same answer applies to crypto prices. The SEC, NASAA, and FINRA investor alert, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Investment Fraud, says "Do Not Rely Solely on AI-Generated Information in Making Investment Decisions." The alert says AI-generated information might rely on data that is inaccurate, incomplete, or misleading, and that even accurate inputs can produce output that is faulty or made up.
It does not know your risk limits
Unless you type them, ChatGPT does not know your max loss, your daily stop, or the markets you will not trade. Nothing in the reply enforces those limits. Limits count when a broker, a bot, or a checklist actually blocks the order.
Red flags
- Products promising guaranteed AI returns, or a system that "can't lose".
- Pressure to deposit quickly, or a stranger offering a bot that trades for you.
- Anyone asking you to paste an account password, an API secret, a seed phrase, or a private key into a chat.
The CFTC customer advisory on AI trading bots warns that fraudsters use interest in AI to pitch automated algorithms, trade signals, and crypto schemes, and that AI cannot predict the future or sudden market changes. A research chat does not need your keys. Keep them out of the thread.
Can ChatGPT run a trading bot?
ChatGPT can help you write a bot's logic and code. Running that bot needs three things the chat does not provide on its own: market data, an execution connection (an exchange or broker API, or an onchain swap API), and risk limits that are enforced outside the chat.
Three routes. None of them is "ask the chat and a trade appears."
- Write a coded bot. You keep the code, you supply the data, and you connect an API you control.
- Use a hosted bot platform. The platform holds the data connection and the execution connection. Read what it actually sends, and set the limits there.
- Run an AI agent connected to a trading service through MCP (Model Context Protocol). MCP is an open way for a host to call tools. The host holds the connection. The chat transcript does not.
When you need an AI agent instead of a chat
An assistant answers, and you act. An agent calls tools, and it can place orders within limits enforced outside the conversation. That split is agentic trading: research can stay in a chat, and the order needs a host that can call a trading service.
Which AI tool is best for trading depends on the job. This page does not compare models. It stays on ChatGPT's tasks: research, rules, files, journaling, and code you run yourself.
Agents that work with a trading MCP server today run in hosts such as Codex (OpenAI's coding agent), Claude Code (the CLI), and Grok.
Try it with a Moby Agent
Keep using ChatGPT for the research prompts above. The agent that can trade runs in a supported host, with one wallet of its own. It does not run inside the ChatGPT chat.
- Download Moby and open the Agent tab. One agent per user, with its own wallet, separate from the main in-app wallet.
- Set your limits. You set your agent's limits on max per trade, daily buy volume and market-cap range from the Moby app, and Moby checks them server-side on every buy your agent makes.
- Tap Connect and create a key, then connect it to Codex, Claude Code (the CLI), or Grok using the host guides.
- Fund the agent wallet with USDC. Agents trade Solana tokens, including tokenized stocks such as AAPLx, NVDAx and SPYx.
- Start with a research prompt you already use in ChatGPT, for example "Check the risk of this Solana token before I buy it with USDC", and approve each trade.
A 0.75% swap fee (minimum $0.90 per swap), plus onchain fees. You get 10% of the Moby fee back in $MOBY on every swap, 20% after your first swap, up to 30% as you climb tiers. Agent trading on Base, BNB Chain and Robinhood Chain is coming soon.
Set up a Moby Agent when you want the host connected and the limits in the app.
FAQ
Can ChatGPT trade for me?
No. OpenAI's help page says ChatGPT cannot make trades. It can help you research and plan; a broker, bot or AI agent places the order.
Can ChatGPT predict the stock market or crypto prices?
No. It can summarize information and help you reason about scenarios, but it does not know future prices. Regulators warn against relying only on AI-generated information for investment decisions.
What are good ChatGPT prompts for trading?
Prompts that ask for structure and sources: turn my idea into rules, list risks for this trade, review my trade log, cite sources for this news summary.
Is it safe to use ChatGPT for trading?
It is a research tool. Verify its numbers, never share account passwords or keys in a chat, and keep your own risk limits.
Can ChatGPT analyze charts or trade data?
It can analyze uploaded files such as CSVs and run calculations on them. Its analysis environment cannot fetch live data on its own, so upload current data.
Which AI tools can actually place trades?
AI agents connected to a trading service through MCP. Moby's agents run in Codex, Claude Code (the CLI), and Grok.
Can I use ChatGPT for crypto trading?
Yes, for research, token checklists and strategy rules. Use an onchain risk check, such as a rug check skill, before any buy.
Set up a Moby Agent
Set up a Moby Agent with its own wallet and your spending guardrails, then connect it to the AI you use.
The supported hosts are Codex, Claude Code (the CLI), and Grok.
