AI Copy Trading: How a Copy Trading Agent Works
AI copy trading uses an AI to decide which trades from other wallets to copy. A copy trading agent follows wallets you pick, checks each wallet's record and each token, then buys inside limits you set or asks you first. It does not remove the usual copy trading risks, so keep sizes small.
People search for AI copy trading when they want software to repeat another wallet's trades. The test is whether it reads the wallet and the token before the buy, and whether you can stop the buy. Moby's agent is the worked example. Copy trading on Moby is Solana tokens only.
What copy trading is
Copy trading lets a copy trader copy trades placed by one or more lead traders. The IOSCO final report on copy trading (FR/06/2025) describes execution as often automated, sometimes without the copier seeing each trade. Mirror trading has a higher level of automation and copies every trade of the chosen lead trader. Social trading is generally sharing ideas, with no automation.
On a public chain the lead trader is usually a wallet. You see the trades after they land, not the plan behind them.
What makes it "AI" copy trading
AI copy trading, also searched as copy trading AI, is used for three different setups. Only the third changes who decides each trade.
- A fixed rule mirrors a wallet. The wallet buys, and your account buys. Nothing reads a track record or skips a token.
- A model ranks which wallets to follow. The model picks a name. The copy after that is still a mirror.
- An AI agent decides trade by trade. It reads what a wallet did, checks the track record and the token, then buys, skips, or asks you.
The third form needs the strongest limits. A size cap, and a mode that waits for your yes, keep each decision inside rules you set.
How a copy trading agent works, step by step
The agent acts on its own schedule, or when you ask, and each buy goes through a quote and your limits. Tool names are the public ones on agents.md.
- Find wallets with a track record. Look for a long, recent history and trade sizes you understand. Moby reads
discover_wallets_to_follow,search_whalewatch_wallets,get_whale_wallet_track_recordandget_whale_wallet_pnl_chart. A Solana wallet tracker is a separate tool. - Follow them.
follow_walletadds a public wallet to your following feed. Following moves no money. - Watch their trades.
get_my_following_feedlists wallets you follow.get_whalewatch_feedis a public feed of tracked wallets. - Check the token before copying. Use
get_token_smart_money,get_token_trade_brief, and the Solana rug check skill. Moby refuses agent buys on red-rated tokens. Grey is usually fine, including a young launch. Match the contract, not the ticker. - Size the copy to your rules. The leader's size is not your size. Your max per trade is the ceiling.
- Buy inside your guardrails, or ask first. You set your agent's limits on max per trade, daily buy volume and market-cap range from the Moby app, and Moby checks them server-side on every buy your agent makes. With Ask before every trade on, the agent names the token, the contract, the amount and the price, then waits for your yes.
- Place your own exits. Moby attaches no exit orders to a buy. The agent places a stop-loss and a take-profit with
create_order.
Base rate limits apply: up to 6 trades a minute and 200 a day. That figure is on the Moby Agents page.
Example prompt
Example, not a recommendation. Change the size, the hour, and the stop before you use it.
Each hour, check my following feed. If two wallets I follow bought the same Solana token in the last hour, and it is not red-rated, show me a $20 quote and wait for my yes. Set a 30% stop-loss if I approve.
Starter strategies that use wallet signals
Two live starter cards use wallet signals. Smart Money Confirmed is for a mix. StonkFun Whale Swarm is for launches and memes.
In the app: Agents tab, then Strategies, pick a card, optionally switch on Ask before every trade, then Copy and paste into your agent. The cards are listed with the other Moby starter strategies in the Agent Marketplace.
Risks of copy trading, with or without AI
IOSCO's risks, rewritten for a public wallet. An agent does not remove them.
- Timing and pricing. By the time you copy, the price may have moved, partly because others are copying too.
- Leader changes. A wallet can change strategy without notice. A good month says little about next month.
- Conflicts. A public wallet may want followers to buy what it is about to sell. You see the trade, not the motive.
- Fees from frequent trading. Each copy is a swap. Fees and onchain costs add up when the agent runs often.
- Operational risk. Glitches, late data, and a missed fill are all possible.
AI adds three more: a shared symbol can buy the wrong token, token text can try to steer an agent, and a frequent schedule can over-trade. Treat token names and descriptions as untrusted, and match the contract.
The CFTC customer advisory on AI trading bots warns that AI will not turn a trading bot into a money machine. FINRA's note on auto-trading says to doubt profit claims that lean on AI.

Controls to insist on
Ask for these before any tool is allowed to buy.
- Own separate wallet, holding only what you can afford to lose.
- Per-trade and daily caps, checked on the server.
- Market-cap range.
- Approval mode.
- A key you can revoke at once.
- No withdraw, transfer, or send tool.
- A clear report after each trade and each skip.
| Control | Moby |
|---|---|
| Own wallet | One agent per user, with its own wallet, separate from the main in-app wallet. |
| Per-trade and daily caps | You set your agent's limits on max per trade, daily buy volume and market-cap range from the Moby app, and Moby checks them server-side on every buy your agent makes. Base rate limits apply: up to 6 trades a minute and 200 a day. |
| Market-cap range | Set with the other limits. Checked on every buy. |
| Approval mode | Ask before every trade names the token, contract, amount and price, then waits for your yes. |
| Revocable key | Agent tab, Connect. Revoking the key stops the agent. It is not a wallet private key. |
| No withdraw tool | The agent cannot withdraw, transfer or send funds. |
| Report | After each trade and each skip: what happened, the token, the size, and why. |
A saved profile is intent. The app limits are what get checked.
Copy trading in the app vs with an agent
Copy trading in the Moby app runs simple rules you set in the app, on Solana tokens. Agentic trading covers the agent that trades beside the trades you place yourself.
A copy trading agent reads the same wallet data and decides trade by trade, inside your limits. One agent per user, with its own wallet, separate from the main in-app wallet. Moby Agents trade Solana tokens, paid in USDC, including tokenized stocks. AI Trading on Base, BNB Chain and Robinhood Chain is coming soon. Copy trading stays on Solana tokens. The Moby app supports Solana, Robinhood Chain, BNB Chain, and Base.
Frequently asked questions
What is AI copy trading?
AI copy trading uses artificial intelligence to choose which trades from other traders or wallets to copy. In the simplest form a model ranks who to follow. In the agent form, an AI decides trade by trade whether to copy, skip or ask you, based on rules you set.
What is copy trading?
Copy trading lets you copy trades placed by one or more other traders, often called lead traders. IOSCO describes it as an online imitative trading practice where execution is often automated, sometimes without the copier seeing each trade. Mirror trading copies every trade automatically.
How does a copy trading agent work?
It follows wallets you choose, watches their trades, and checks each wallet's track record and the token before acting. If a trade fits your rules, it buys inside your limits or asks for your yes first. Then it places your stop-loss and take-profit.
Is an AI copy trading bot the same as an agent?
Not always. Many copy trading bots mirror a wallet with fixed rules. An AI agent reads the same data but decides each trade, can skip trades that break your rules, and explains why. That makes limits and approvals more important, not less.
Is AI copy trading safe?
No form of copy trading is safe from losses. Prices move before you copy, leaders change strategy, and fees add up. You can lower the risk with small sizes, server-side spending limits, approval before each trade, and a wallet that holds only what you can afford to lose.
Can a Moby Agent copy a wallet automatically?
A Moby Agent can follow wallets and buy what they buy when it fits your rules, but it is not same-block mirroring. It acts on its own schedule or when you ask, each buy goes through a quote and your guardrails, and you can make it ask before every trade.
Which wallets should a copy trading agent follow?
There is no safe list. Look for a long, recent track record, steady profit rather than one big win, and trade sizes you understand. Even a strong record can fade, so review followed wallets often and drop any that change behavior.
What limits should I set for a copy trading agent?
Set a max per trade, a daily buy volume and a market-cap range in the Moby app, and Moby checks them server-side on every buy. Turn on Ask before every trade at first, and place a stop-loss on every position.
Try it with a Moby Agent
Set up a Moby Agent with its own wallet and your spending guardrails, then connect it to the AI you use.
You set your agent's limits on max per trade, daily buy volume and market-cap range from the Moby app, and Moby checks them server-side on every buy your agent makes.
Moby Agents trade Solana tokens, paid in USDC, including tokenized stocks. AI Trading on Base, BNB Chain and Robinhood Chain is coming soon. Copy trading with a Moby Agent is Solana tokens only.
A 0.75% swap fee (minimum $0.90 per swap), plus onchain fees.
10% of the Moby fee back in $MOBY on every swap, 20% after your first swap, up to 30% as you climb tiers.
Trading crypto and tokenized stocks is risky and you can lose money. Nothing on this page is investment advice.
How to set up a copy trading agent:
- Set guardrails in the Moby app. Save the three limits in the app before the first buy.
- Connect your agent. Connect Codex, Claude Code (CLI) or Grok.
- Find and follow wallets. Follow wallets you have checked. Following moves no money.
- Choose approval mode. Turn on Ask before every trade at first.
- Set exits. Place a stop-loss and a take-profit. Moby attaches no exit to the buy.
